Air Quality Management
Transport is one of the key contributors to poor air quality in towns and cities across the UK and Europe. STS has extensive experience of the technologies and measures that can help to reduce pollutant emissions from transport and improve local air quality. Our experience covers:
- Low emission vehicle technologies and fuels such as hybrid and electric vehicles and gas fuels.
- Low emission traffic management strategies such as low emission zones and access control systems.
- Traffic reduction measures and schemes to promote mode shift.
We also have a detailed understanding of UK and European air quality policy and legislation. STS has worked with the public sector on the development of air quality action plans and strategies, and the assessment of emission reduction measures. STS members were instrumental in the development of the Low Emission Zone concept in the UK and were closely involved in the initial development of the London LEZ. Also STS members recently conducted a study for the European Commission to assess measures to reduce emissions from heavy goods vehicles.
