Our clients

STS members have worked with a diverse range of clients in both the public and private sectors. For each project we clarify the client's needs and pull together a team with the necessary skills and experience from our network of consultants. Some of our key clients include:

Examples of some of the projects we have carried out for these clients include:

BAA Heathrow, Clean Vehicle Programme - Since 2003 members of the STS network manages the Clean Vehicles Programme (CVP) on behalf of BAA Heathrow. The CVP helps companies identify and implement cost-effective measures for improving the environmental performance of their business and fleet transport operations. The CVP also rewards achievements through an assessment and certification process. STS are responsible for convincing companies to participate, auditing performance and helping companies to improve the environmental performance of their business and fleet transport.

 Clean

In 2006 STS designed and launched a NOx reduction grant programme for members of the Clean Vehicles Programme. The aim of the grant programme is to incentivise members of the CVP to introduce a greater range of measures for reducing NOx emissions from their fleet vehicles. The programme has been designed as a competitive bid process where proposals are assessed on their cost-effectiveness for reducing NOx emissions.

BAA Heathrow, Travel Planning Support - STS were commissioned by BAA Heathrow to develop their travel plan. STS’s role involved rewriting the Heathrow travel plan document and working with partner organisations to help them develop their travel planning activities. STS also designed and developed a personal jouey planner for use by the Airport Commuter centre.

Bristol City Council, Assessment of CO2 impact of the local transport plan - This project assessed the CO2 implications of the Greater Bristol Joint LTP and the associated major scheme bid. The analysis suggested that the full package, together with assumed improvements in vehicle fuel efficiency, would restrict growth in CO2 emissions to around 2%, which is in line with the national average. To drive emissions down further significant demand management measures would be needed focusing on car traffic in urban and rural areas, and heavy goods traffic on trunk roads.

Centre for Sustainable Energy, CSE, Transport essentials training - STS developed and delivered a training course on the main elements of sustainable transport covering: national and European policies, vehicle fuels and technologies and travel behaviour. The course was delivered to officers from 5 local authorities across England and Scotland.

CENEX, Biomethane Toolkit – STS were commissioned to develop a set of tools and information to allow local authorities and other to assess the practicalities of using biomethane as a vehicle fuel. The project built on our market leading experience in biomethane as a vehicle fuel.

Biogas Biogas

Cory Environmental, Biomethane for vehicles - Cory contracted STS to provide technical assistance in assessing opportunities for using biomethane from its treatment of organic waste to power vehicles in its fleet.  STS provided the national policy situation, technical information on vehicles and organised a study tour to Sweden to see a biomethane fleet in action.

DEFRA, Local and Regional Action on Carbon Reduction - Working with the Centre for Sustainable Energy, STS has been assessing the potential for local actions to reduce carbon emissions as part of the Govement’s review of the Climate Change Programme. The role of STS was to look at the potential for carbon reduction from transport, considering the role of local and regional authorities. The work concluded in 2005 and was reported at the NSCA conference on ‘Local Authority Response to Climate Change’.

The Co-op, Sustainability accounting in the biodiesel supply chain - This project assessed how the Co-op could use the carbon and sustainability reporting information being developed as part of the Renewable Transport Fuels Obligation’ (RTFO) to ensure sustainability of their biodiesel supply.

European Commissions, HGV emissions study - STS, led by Sadler Consultants, undertook a research project for the European Commission on how the EU can support the greater use of technical measures to reduce the emissions of particulates and NOx from heavy duty vehicles. For further information visit http://www.airqualitypolicy.co.uk/content/view/19/49/

EC European Commission, BioNett Project - This project is developing a supportive framework for encouraging the growth of local markets for bio-fuels as a low carbon alteative for Local Authorities and other public sector transport fleets across the EU. The project will establish local supply networks and provide capacity building within these networks through training and information provision. STS has been contracted to provide training support through the training of the project participants and the development of training material. The project website can be visited at www.bio-nett.org

Energy Saving Trust, Green Fleet Review panel - Three members of the STS Network – Simon Collings, Guy Hitchcock, and Ben Lane – have been appointed as specialist advisors to the Energy Saving Trust's, Govement funded advice programmes. These programmes provide free consultancy advice to organisations on how to reduce costs and improve the environmental performance of their business transport operations. For more information about the free fleet management advice programme visit www.est.org.uk/fleet/

Environmental Protection UK (Formally NSCA), The Role of Biogas as a Transport Fuel - This project studied the practical, economic and environmental issues surrounding the use of biogas as a vehicle fuel. The project, commissioned by the NSCA with support from the BOC foundation, estimated that about 8% of the UK’s road transport fuel could be met from the digestion of agricultural and food waste to produce transport quality biogas and could reduce GHG emissions by some 9 millions tonnes per year nationally. Full details of the study can be found in the final report: NSCA Biogas Report

Low Carbon Vehicle Partnership - STS has undertaken a feasibility study for The Low Carbon Vehicle Partnership (LowCVP) into how a Forward Commitment project would work when applied to low carbon buses and the UK bus market. The study is intended to provide a blue-print of how to implement a low carbon bus procurement group. www.lowcvp.org.uk.

North Star Housing, Travel Policy review - STS were commissioned to review North Star Housing’s travel policy and to make recommendations for a more environmentally sustainable and cost-effective policy. The work involved an analysis of the cost, age, mileage and emissions profile of the existing grey fleet. From the analysis it was possible to estimate potential costs and emission savings by introducing alteative policy options.

Suffolk County Council, Business Mileage Benchmarking - STS were commissioned by Suffolk County Council to benchmark their employee business mileage and costs against other similar local authorities. The benchmarking exercise helped to identify opportunities for reducing business mileage and costs. The final report included recommendations on how to set and implement business mileage reduction targets as well as a detailed action plan for implementing a strategy to achieve the targets.
