Who We Are


STS was formed when a group of consultants specialising in environmental transport realised there was a need for both the public and private sector to have access to a wider sustainable transport knowledge base and project management service. STS was born from the desire to offer a complete strategic and technical advisory service to address the environmental and social impacts of transport.

After several successful projects for the Government and private sector, the network has started expanding as new consultants join STS, adding even more experience and knowledge to the network. The STS network gives you access to a unique body of expertise with a combined professional background of nearly 150 years experience of working on transport and environmental issues.

The core members of the network who contribute regularly to our project work are:
Simon Collins  Simon Collings specialises in travel behaviour and ‘green’ fleet management. He has experience of working with both public and private sector organisations to help develop, implement and evaluate initiatives aimed at reducing the environmental impacts of transport. With over 14 years of experience of working in the transport, energy and environmental fields Simon can be relied upon to develop appropriate solutions that benefit clients and their stakeholders. Simon’s key skill areas include:
  • Travel plans and individualised marketing
  • ‘Green’ fleet management
  • Environmental assessments (e.g. carbon ‘footprinting’) of transport policies, programmes and measures
 
Guy Hitchcock  Guy Hitchcock has over 15 years’ experience working on the energy and environmental issues surrounding transport. He has considerable expertise in policy and strategy work, and the evaluation and monitoring of new transport schemes and technologies. He has worked extensively for UK Government, local authorities and the European Commission. Guy’s key skills include:
  • Policy development relating to air quality, energy use and climate change
  • Technical advice on vehicle emissions, alternative fuels and new vehicle technologies
  • ‘Green’ fleet management and business travel issues
 
Ben Lane  Ben Lane’s career has spanned both academic research and independent consultancy in both public and private sectors. Projects with which he has been involved range from life cycle assessments of cleaner vehicles to the provision of travel plan training. Ben is particularly interested in the role of consumer attitudes and believes that only by understanding the psychological factors that influence car purchasing, can low carbon options be effectively promoted. His key skills include:
  • Life cycle analysis of cleaner fuels and vehicles
  • Car-buyer attitudes and behavior in relation to cleaner vehicles
  • Design of effective vehicle taxation to promote low carbon vehicles
 
David Martin  David Martin specialises in economic and technical assessments and policy analysis of transport energy efficiency, transport technology, alternative transport fuels and renewable energy. He has 30 years of international transport and energy research and consultancy experience, together with skills and knowledge in project and programme management and energy policy analysis. His key skills are:
  • Economic and technical assessments of energy and transport technologies
  • Energy and transport policy analysis
  • Transport energy efficiency, and alternative fuels in transport
  • Sustainable energy development and renewable energy
 
Jonathan Murray  Jonathan Murray is an environmental economist with 19 years of experience working in the automotive and fuel industries for companies including the Energy Saving Trust, the Motor Industry Research Association (MIRA) and Total Oil among others. He specialises in sustainable transport, working with public and private sector clients including the European Commission, UK Government at all levels, blue chip companies, NGOs, trade associations and new start ups. Areas in which he specialises include:
  • Securing Government and stakeholder support
  • Policy and market analysis
  • Programme design, management and assessment
 
David Lemon  David Lemon specialises in the environmental aspects of automotive powertrain engineering covering passenger cars and light vans to heavy-duty vehicles and off-highway machinery. He has 33 years experience in the automotive industry covering vehicle manufacture, component design, development and procurement together with advanced research into the reduction of emissions. He has an in-depth knowledge of automotive technology, transport operations and environmental issues covering both conventional and innovative technologies. Other expertise:
  • Extensive knowledge of vehicle emissions legislation the EU, US and Japan
  • New technology assessment and exhaust aftertreatment
  • Alternative fuels and their vehicle applications and infrastructure needs
  • Fleet emissions audits and cost-benefit analysis
 
Malcolm Noyle  Malcolm Noyle is a specialist in fleet vehicle sourcing, management and operation. He helps companies find realistic, practical and innovative ways to reduce the CO2 from their fleet vehicles while also making significant reductions to the fleet operating costs. In addition to environmental skills Malcolm is also a specialist in the field of Work Related Road Safety (WRRS) and fleet scheme design. Malcolm’s skills cover:
  • Designing practical ways of reducing carbon emissions while also lowering costs
  • WRRS audits and implementation of health and safety strategies and policies
  • Expertise in Telematic solutions and other transport carbon reduction technologies
